When my family visited back in April, we took them to The Rotunda for afternoon tea as a belated birthday party for my sister. Funny as it sounds, but at the time I hadn't "discovered" Crown & Crumpet in Japantown yet -.-' This restaurant is located on the 4th floor of Neiman Marcus downtown SF, and we walked through Chinatown to get there, stopping for pictures along the way.
After you are seated they will serve this giant piece of bread (I forgot what it's called...) that was pipping hot and perfectly chewy. It was pretty much soft fluff on the outside and was hollowed at the center. The strawberry butter that came with the bread paired really well. Then we ordered lobster bisque soup and 2 lobster club sandwiches to share as appetizer. The lobster bisque soup was good, a tad salty I thought but otherwise creamy and smooth. There were only a few lobster chunks but that was understandable LOL!
They were more generous with the lobster in the club sandwiches, which were excellent, by the way!
It was hilarious but we were pretty much stuffed by the time the afternoon tea spread arrived. My brother, having many food allergies, had his own separate afternoon tea, the smallest of the 3 trays.
The savories that day were cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon, egg, and chicken salad sandwiches and crab puff. The sweets that day were raspberry tart, pecan tart, carrot cake, chocolate fudge cake, butter pound cakes in the shape of sea shells, and cranberry and raisin scones. There were so much leftover we had a second afternoon tea the next day LOL!
Across the street from Neiman Marcus is a nice little park and we stopped there for a few pictures. My family had a blast and I do recommend the afternoon tea either here or at Crown & Crumpet in Japantown for out of town visitors, unless you now for a fact they dislike afternoon teas.
The second time we came back here for my birthday, and of course I had a bad (or rather, bed) hair day!! T.T We were seated right in front of a window in the wing of the rotunda this time with the street view. It was awesome!
I actually remembered to take a picture of the bread's hollow center ^.^ Most of the savories that day were repeats and only the flaky quiche we haven't had before. Same cranberry and raisin scones, pecan tart, and chocolate fudge cake, but new mocha mousse and raspberry mousse cakes, and lemon meringue tart. Had tons of leftovers again ^.^
