Izakaya Amu is another long-time local favorite in Boulder. I believe the first time hubby and I dined here was back in 2003. Yep, 17 years. Back then, being young (read: stupid) college students we didn't know crap about Japanese food. We just went along with our classmates, grad students, and professors, and we ate what they ate. It wasn't until our return from the two years in Yokohama that we started to appreciate the food at Amu.

As soon as hubby and I sat down, the chef always started us out with a small plate on the house while we peruse the menu and order drinks.
Then we would order other small plates like these below.

Oh, and while they do serve sashimi, Amu is strictly *not* a sushi joint. We were told they had to direct people next door to their sister shop, Sushi Zanmai, at least once every night as folks would walk in expecting a full sushi menu. Nope.
Then
hubby and I usually order several more dishes from the menu, many of
them appetizer-sized and only a few could be considered an "entree."
These below are "entrees," nabe dishes like sukiyaki, etc., also oden, curry, and okonomiyaki.

Desserts are also made in-house. Can you tell we have our favorites? ^.^
So here's the kicker: after so many years with the establishment, Chef Y. struck out on her own with her husband, sushi Chef K., from Sushi Zanmai next door to form Aoi Sushi & Izakaya (will post later). So suffice to say the food at Amu is no longer the same--not worse, not better, just definitely different.
Unfortunately, the current events have also shuttered both Amu and Zanmai until further notice. I sure hope they'll both come out of this OK.

Those desserts are beautiful!I haven't had any Asian bakery for almost two months and I cant wait to have some proper sweets... (Actually I can't wait to get some rice first. 5lb went from 6 dollars to 25 on Amazon geez).
Hey Mina,
Urgh. That's one of the many reasons I hate Amazon, although now we have to order from them all the time because, well, many of the things we can't find anywhere else :(
Goodness--What would I give to go eat those pretty Japanese desserts again T.T
Take care and stay healthy!
Hugs,
D.
