Makeup Brushes

Update Monday, June 23, 2014.

Just a quick update to post pictures of the Aura Science Foundation Brush I finally got around to photographing. This brush is at least 10 years old, having been with me since college! Because back then, silly me didn't have a clue and went a bought a foundation brush even though I never use foundation LOL But now I do use some bb cream for concealing purposes (will review soon) around the nose, mouth, and under eye area, and this brush is great! I do believe it is synthetic, it feels synthetic and is very soft.

Original post Sunday, May 15, 2011.

Okay this post is going to be such a joke for a lot of people, but yes, I'm totally green to makeup brushes. I completely understand why some people spend a boat load of money on makeup brushes, but for years I've been a minimal brush person. Meaning I use makeup brushes minimally for things I can't apply with my (freshly washed and very clean) fingertips, like powder, blushes, and eye liner. Even then, I didn't really have a decent brush for powder and blush until recently, and as for lining my eyes, pretty much anything will work. Other than that, it was (and a lot of time, still is) all my hands, you know, for the greatest control :P

Avon Moisture Therapy Vitamin Treatment Hand Cream

Just a quick review for this 125mL/4.2fl oz. tube of Avon Moisture Therapy Vitamin Treatment Hand Cream I had with me since Japan!

This is a straightforward hand cream and while it looks simple and boring, both hubby and I quite like it. It is decently thick and moisturizing but is not greasy at all. The moisturizing effect lasts for a good while too, although I will admit that it washes right off with water. I tend to put this on when I'm sitting down work and it keeps my hands nice and soft. It is scented with a generic hand cream fragrance, nothing special.

Given the fact that I paid $1.50 for it, I'd say it's a darn nice product to throw around in the living room ^.^ Too bad Avon discontinued it...

Mark Celestial Eyes Shimmery Cream Shadows

I think I should stop having any kind of expectations for a product, because it almost always pleasantly surprises me that way. The Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Multi-Pencils did, and now these Mark Celestial Eyes Shimmery Cream Shadows as well! Actually, I might be speaking too soon, because I've only swatched these and haven't actually worn them yet. Creams shadows are always tricky with my oily lids, and in my experience there are only a handful of cream shadows that didn't crease on me, Visee Aqua Shining Eyes, Lavshuca Eye Jelly, and Lancome Colour Dose, all three of which have been discontinued, and the only one still available now is Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour.

Grey Storm and Purple Halo. All pictures taken in natural light without flash.

Anyway, despite the risk of creasing, these Mark Celestial Eyes Shimmery Cream Shadows caught my eyes with their "artsy" pigment splatters and I bought them anyway. There are 4 variations available, Grey StormPurple HaloMint Sky, and Copper Dusk, and I thought they all looked kind of neat ^.^ I haven't seen a cream shadow like this before so I'll give props to Avon for going the creative route. But with that I have to say the packaging sucks. Think about it, it's a cream shadow, and when packaged like a powder shadow it's bound to dry out quickly, since that compact isn't air tight in anyway. But I guess very few cosmetics makers actually pay attention to the packaging of their cream shadows, and most put them in a pan or jar anyway. And I suppose Avon wouldn't be able to squeeze a dual color cream compact with pigment splatters into a tube ^.^

Mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush Part II

Here are the rest of the Mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush I have. There are 4 colors available, Hush Baby, Chica, Love Rush, and Sandy, and I have already written about Hush Baby and Chica. Love Rush and Sandy took me longer to get to because Love Rush has no shimmers at all and is way more pigmented than the rest, and Sandy is a bronzer, which I don't really use at all. And even then I haven't used them, so this is only a preview post.

Love Hush: the blush's matte-ness makes its color all the more opaque, as if it's not already pigmented. Just like the other Mosaic Blushes, here are 3 different colors in the pan, and they swirl together for a nice reddish coral flush with brown undertone.

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Multi-Pencils

Saw these Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Multi-Pencils on clearance and my curiosity got the best of me (it always does, I haven't gotten very far from meenke roots). These are double-ended pencils, one end for eyes, the other for cheeks and lips. Sounds pretty neat, no? I only saw 3 color variations, Twice the Spice, Raspberry Radiance, and Sugar Plum, and I bought all 3 to play with.

Marimekko for Avon Palettes

On this latest home visit, I had a chance to go through some of my things and re-discovered several things that were buried away in them. Among these are 2 brand new Marimekko for Avon palettes that I had totally forgotten about! So what do I do but bring them back to Japan with me?

Marimekko for Avon Poppy Bloom Eyeshadow Palette and Poppy Bouquet All-Over Face Palette. All pictures taken in door with flash, unless otherwise noted.

I actually have all 4 palettes, as each Poppy Bloom and Poppy Bouquet is actually a pair of Eyeshadow and All-over Face Palettes. However, I bought just the Poppy Bloom Eyeshadow and Poppy Bouquet All-Over Face Palettes first, found them rather pretty and so went chasing the other Poppy Bloom All-Over Face and Poppy Bouquet Eyeshadow Palettes after. Throw in the fact that I've been moving about for the past 7 years, first across the ocean and back, then across the country and back, then across the ocean again, the later 2 palettes were packed separately from these first 2, and I couldn't find them on this last visit. I don't think I lost them, I hope not at least, but they're somewhere in the mountain of boxes in Grandma's basement that will take me more than just a week to dig out. So yeah, just these 2 for now.

Avon Cool Bliss Eyeshadow

Out of pure curiosity, I picked up these Avon Cool Bliss Eyeshadow among other things during a super sale. I think Avon makes nice blushes but crappy eye shadows, and out of the several I've tried, only one, the Avon 8-in-1 Palette, intrigued me enough to write a review for a few years ago and even then, it wasn't a good review. The rest I didn't even bother with.

So I've got to give these Cool Bliss Eyeshadows some brownie points for reviving my interest after such a long time. I'm not sure if there were other colors available, but there was only 2 when I made my purchase, N01 Pebble Stone and N701 Sparkling Plum. I bought both.

Mark Earth Face Glow

I'm in luuuuurv with these Mark Earth Face Glow and went crazy looking for more backups but they're no longer available, anywhere. Boo. Hiss.

I'm so glad I gave these a chance when they came out. At first I scoffed at them, because, well, they're itty bitty. I know Mark makes their cosmetics on the smaller side, and I appreciate that because I hate gigantic bulky stuff, but these blushes have diameters that are a mere 1.5 inch! They're the size of a single eye shadow!

But that's about all I can rant about with these blushes, as they are fantastic otherwise. They come in 3 colors, Solar, Pebbles, and Quartz, and I'm so happy I bought all 3 colors. I must say though all 3 colors are quite sheer, so many folks out there must hate these, but I love them to death. They're baked and so not as smooth as they could be, but they're gorgeous going on.

Solar: marbleized champagne and pale fleshy pink and makes a glowing highlighter. As you can see, this is no blush at all.

Mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush

Bought these Mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush a while ago but didn't use them until now. There are 4 different palettes, Chica, Sandy, Hush Baby, and Love Rush, although I wish they would make more palettes because I want to collect them all ^.^ By the way, I feel the pictures of palettes online are, umm, way off, especially for Love Rush and Hush Baby, so I wouldn't depend on them to make a purchasing decision if I were you. I would suggest you google them for actual photos of the palettes.

Mark Snap To It Case
***Picture from Avon.com.

Each palettes has 3 different colors, all mixed up in a checker pattern, very pretty. You will have to buy the Mark Snap To It Case separately for these Good Glowing Mosaic Blushes, but the cases all have magnetic strips that can accommodate any combination of Mark eyes, lips, and cheek colors. The case is clear and straight forward with a thin mirror underneath the lid running length wise.

Chica inside the Snap To It Case, the smallest size (fits 1 cheek color pan or 2 eye/lip color pans)

The thin mirror strip underneath the lid.

I bought all 4 palettes but have only used 2 colors so far, Hush Baby and Chica. These blushes have a nice and smooth texture, not too soft that they would crumble but not too hard that they would dust up a storm when I swirl my brush over them. They are unscented, which is a plus for anyone who is sensitive to fragrance. Pigmentation is varied, however, and that's the only complaint I have against them. I haven't tried the other 2 colors Sandy and Love Rush yet, and just judging from the pan Love Rush appears to be the most pigmented out of the 4 palettes and Sandy the sheerest.

Hush Baby: a very sheer pink with silvery pink shimmers. This is pretty much a highlighter as it is so sheer it wouldn't even show up on my medium-fair skin! Even after swirling a good amount onto my brush, all I see is shimmers.
- Top row far left, bottom row 2nd from left, and top row far right: looks brown but swatches a coral with brownish undertone.
- Bottom row far left, top row 3rd from left, and bottom row far right: looks rosy but swatches a frosty carnation pink that is on the cooler side.
- Top row 2nd from left, bottom row 3rd from left: looks coral pink but swatches a bright hot pink. This color surprises me the most because it swatches nothing like how it appears in the pan. Odd.

Chica: this is a decently pigmented blush, at least for me. On my cheeks it shows up a pinky peach, very nice! There are shimmers in this blush, but they don't really show up as shimmers, instead imparting just a bit of a glow.
- Top row far left, bottom row 2nd from left, top row far right: looks peachy but swatches a reddish coral with no shimmers.
- Bottom row far left, top row 3rd from left, bottom row far right: a pretty rose with very fine gold shimmers that doesn't show up. This color actually shows up true to the color in pan, only a tad more vivid.
- Top row 2nd from left, bottom row 3rd from left: looks nude brown but swatches a warm dusty rose with brownish undertones. This color also has very fine gold shimmers that doesn't show up at all. On the back of my hand, this color makes my warm yellowy olive skin tone looks a bit bruised. Good thing it doesn't look like that on my cheeks! Phew!

Avon Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Hand Cream

This Avon Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Hand Cream is the 3rd Avon item I received in my recent care package. It's my favorite one too, and hubby promptly snatched it from me because it's just that nice ^.^

It's not too thick but is moisturizing. It feels clean after application, no greasy residue or sticky feeling at all! And best of all, it's unscented! Over all, this hand cream is great but nothing spectacular. That said, I also got it during an Avon promotion for only $0.99 xD For that amount, it's more than worth it. If I had known its quality before hand, I'd buy 10 tubes at that price! So yeah, if I see another good deal for this hand cream, I'd probably stock up!

Avon Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Hand Cream:
WATER/EAU, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, GLYCERIN, ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE, ELAEIS GUINEENSIS (PALM) OIL, COLLOIDAL OATMEAL, CETEARETH-20, TRIETHANOLAMINE, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) OIL, ISOPROPYL PALMITATE, CARBOMER GLYCOL STEARATE, PETROLATUM, METHYLPARABEN, LANOLIN OIL, CHOLETH-24, IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA, CETETH-24, POLYSORBATE 60, DIMETHICONE, TETRASODIUM EDTA, PEG-150 STEARATE, STEARETH-20.

Avon SkinSoSoft Soft & Relaxed Night Softening Hand Cream

This Avon SkinSoSoft Soft & Relaxed Night Softening Hand Cream is another item from my recent care package ^.^ But what a mouthful! Did you notice there are 3 instances of the word "soft" in that name? Urgh. Come on Avon, be more creative!

Anyway, this hand cream has Night Blooming Cactus Flower extract in it and it promises to make your hands soft overnight with regular nightly use.

I honestly like this hand cream much better than the other WinterSoft Intense Concentrate. I know it's not fair to compare these two because the WinterSoft Intense Concentrate is a treatment targeting problem areas and isn't meant to be applied else where, not even as a hand cream. However, I do have to use my hands to apply it onto the problem areas, and I really hate the sticky feel it left behind and would have to wash my hands every time to get rid of it.

This Night Softening Hand Cream has a better texture and leaves my hands instantly soft after application. It absorbs quickly and completely, leaving no sticky feelings. I use it on my feet too, and it's only been 3 weeks but I'm already about half way through the tube. This one smells better too, a citrusy scent that ends up smelling like generic soap, which is kind of odd for a hand cream, but I would pick this over the super strong old flowery grandma's perfume any day!

Avon SkinSoSoft Soft & Relaxed Night Softening Hand Cream:
WATER/EAU, DIMETHICONE, MINERAL OIL/HUILE MINERALE, GLYCERYL STEARATE SE, CETYL ALCOHOL, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, GLYCERIN, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, AMARANTHUS CAUDATUS SEED EXTRACT, SACCHAROMYCES LYSATE EXTRACT, CEREUS GRANDIFLORUS (CACTUS) FLOWER EXTRACT, SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE, PHENOXYETHANOL
METHYLPARABEN, PARFUM/FRAGRANCE, PROPYLPARABEN, DISODIUM EDTA.

Avon SkinSoSoft WinterSoft Intense Concentrate

This Avon SkinSoSoft Wintersoft Intense Concentrate was among the items in a care package I recently received from home. I was thrilled, since it is getting chilly outside and my hands and feet are starting to dry up.

Apparently there is alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) in this cream and the tube warns to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure during use and even for a week after use! That may be a bit problematic, since I was expecting to be able to use this on my hands. The instructions on the tube says elbows, knees and other problem areas, but one of my biggest problem areas is my hands! Also, wouldn't I have to use my hands to apply this to the other "problem areas" anyway? Are they really expecting me to wear gloves out during and a week after use? Or are they expecting me to wash my hands after each use to get rid of the AHA? But wouldn't that be counterproductive, causing my hands to become even drier? I guess you can see I'm not so thrilled about this product containing AHA. I don't quite understand why I would need AHA on my elbows, knees and other "problem areas" to begin with.

Anyway after a few uses, I think I might actually have to follow the tube's instructions after all. The texture of this cream doesn't feel so thick, just like any other cream, but it turns out to be quite intense. It truly isn't meant to be use anywhere else other than the problem areas and I made the mistake of applying it all over my legs once just to see. Nothing bad happened, only that my legs felt sticky for the next 24 hours until I could wash it off in the shower! So yes, if you apply it on areas other than the super dry areas like elbows, knees, or heels, you might be annoyed with the sticky sensation as though the cream never really absorbed into the skin.

Another thing I found really annoying with this cream is that it is very heavily perfumed. And not with just any fragrance but a very flowery grandma's perfume. Sigh. But hey, at least it does its job on my elbows and knees, but I definitely will not buy this again :(

Avon Solutions Plus Total Radiance Eye Gel

After many a jars of Avon Hydrofirming Eye Creams later, I got a bored and started making my rounds with various different eye creams, only to return Avon after a big circle, this time with Solutions Plus Total Radiance Eye Gel.

I have dry skin, so at night I apply a much thicker eye cream for deep moisturizing treatment. The thing is these heavier moisturizing creams also melt the sunscreen I wear around my eyes during the day and stain my contacts, so I have to stick to a much lighter cream, preferably gels, for day time use, and this Total Radiance Eye Gel fits the bill.

This eye gel is not the most amazing thing I've ever tried, but it's really great for its price! It's very light, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly. Although whenever I accidentally apply too much it pills up, but other than that, it gives my eyes just the right amount of moisture to balance any dryness my sunscreen may have caused and I have no complaints whatsoever. As for the "total radiance" thing, I can't say much about that because I don't get under eye circles very often so I can't really tell if it does any brightening. And for looking tired, my secret to perking up actually has nothing to do with skincare - it's chocolate :D

No, the jar didn't come half empty - I was half way through with it before remembering to take a picture :P The eye gel does not have any fragrance and I recommend storing it in the fridge for a cooling effect upon application. I would definitely buy this again, but I have also have a ton of other eye gel/essences lining up to try, so perhaps after making another around I will circle back to it again :)

Avon Hydrofirming Drench Recovery Mask

I was super excited to try this Avon Hydrofirming Drench Recovery Mask when I first spotted it from the Avon catalogue. After all, I still use the Hydrofirming Eye Cream every morning, and although this may sound sarcastic, but who could resist that lovely splash of clear blue water on the white packaging? Seriously, I would totally put that on my face. I'm not joking!

Opening the package didn't disappoint me either. The clear pale blue gel inside had a citrusy soapy scent - it smelled really fresh! Applying the gel mask was easy too, because the gel was just thick enough to not slide around or drip. After 15 minutes or so, it dries down to a sticky clear layer as expected.

Going to rinse it off though, I got a bit of a surprise: the nice layer of gel puffs up into a thick layer of goo that just takes for freakin' ever to rinse off. It wasn't disgusting or anything, it just felt like I had dunk my head into goo. The results afterwards was meh too. Better the SkinLite wash-off masks, but not moisturizing enough. Come on, it's supposed to be hydrofirming drench recovery? May be drench in goo was more like it!

Good thing this was cheap. $.99 for a pack of 2, so about $.50 each. It wasn't a horrible wash-off mask, but it was nothing impressive either. I probably won't buy it again.

Avon 8-in-1 Palette

Another part of my Avon Loot is the 8-in-1 Palette, which is available in 3 color groups: Water Colors, Paradise Greens, and Neutral Tones.

***Picture from Avon.com.

I have the Paradise Greens palette with 8 pretty neutral colors, most of which are pastels. Also, within the 8 colors, 2 are semi-pearls and 4 semi-metallics, and I'm saying semi because they aren't quite pearls or metallics. Also, these shadows are not pigmented at all with only 3 of the 8 are low intensity colors and the rest are very sheer. They will utterly disappoint you if you are looking for a tiniest hint of color. Sad, but true.

And unfortunately, as excited as I was with this palette in the beginning, I'm growing more frustrated with each use. Even though I like sheer eye shadows, these colors are way too difficult to pair up, not only because they barely show up but also because of their half-assed finishes. The only good news that's left is their soft and airy texture. So yeah, if you must try these palettes, I would recommend to stay away from Paradise Greens and pick from the other 2 color groups. That, or save your $8 altogether :D

Anyways, here are the colors, from left to right:
- White sand: very sheer, probably the second most metallic shade in the lot (second to the Pale marzipan). This goes on a very pale gray with silver metallic sheen.
- Seafoam green: matte, low intensity. Looks pretty in the pan, but I can't use it at all. I tried it on the back of my hand, and it matched perfectly the color of the blood veins from underneath my skin - not something I'd want to put on my eye lids, you know? Ick.
- Pale marzipan: metallic, very sheer, it actually goes on a metallic gold. Very pretty!
- Pastel pink: semi-metallic, very sheer, a cool pastel pink with silvery semi-metallic sheen.
- Putty: matte, very sheer, a basic highlighting color, just that it's matte. Works well as an under-brow highlighter or for inner corners of the eyes.
- Golden olive: semi-pearl, low intensity, an olive with semi-pearly gold sheen. Makes a good medium shade for a smoky eye!
- Purplish brown: semi-pearl, low intensity, a brown with semi-pearly purple sheen. Unfortunately, I can only use this color as a liner because it gives my lids this disgusting purplish bruise otherwise. Let's just say if I want to dress up as a zombie for Halloween, I would load up my eyes with this color and I will look as good as dead.
- Pale cappuccino: semi-metallic, very sheer, this color actually goes on a golden beige and is quite pretty.

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Horizon Blush

This Jillian Dempsey for Avon Horizon Blush was a part of my first Avon Loot (well, I actually did pay them for everything, but since everything was also so cheap, it might as well be a loot...). Anyway, this blush is also my very first Avon blush!

The Horizon Blush is available in 2 shades: Pink (left) and Apricot Horizon (right).

I am only going to review the Apricot Horizon today because I've only use that one so far.

Apricot Horizon is a muted tomato red with pink undertone and hints of peach. When I first swatched the blush, I was thinking it's going to be very pigmented. And -woh- it is extremely pigmented! I swirled my brush over the gradation, shook off the excess, blended the color on the back of my hand first to lighten up the mix, blotted my cheek with a tissue after application, and still my cheeks were as red as a doll's (and not in a good way)! Finally, I had to blend again with my fingers and the pigment finally let up a little and gave me very flushed cheeks. Yikes! I guess I'll just have to just dab my brush on the powder next time to pick up less color O.O

The blush itself is very soft and smooth, which is impressive given its price. Also, if you look closely, the lighter half of the blush looks pearly because it has fine shimmers. However, these shimmers don't show up at all and the blush goes on completely matte. My only complaint is that it's a bit too dusty. I didn't swirl my brush over it a million times or anything, just once or twice and even that left me with a black case covered in fine pink dust. Perhaps dabbing the brush next time will help...?

Avon Loot! Part II

I had lots of fun with my last venture into Avon, so picked up a few more items that peaked my curiosity. And while these don't quite measure up to my last loot, they're not so bad either.

My favorite items in this lot are the Seeing Stripes Cheek Colors. I got both the Warm and Cool Collection, and I didn't think each would come in such a giant pan - they're HUGE!!! Anyways, they're very pigmented and will probably last me a century. The only thing I find strange about them is while the Cool Collection is an array of cool pinks, the Warm Collection turns out to be a bronzer! When I saw these online, I thought, okay, computers don't always display accurate colors, but these turn out exactly as they're shown on screen! Not exactly what I was hoping for, but whatever.

- Warm Collection: bronzer, anyone?

- Cool Collection: pretty cool-toned pinks, mauves, and raspberries.

My biggest disappointment in the lot is the Luster Glow Lip Shine. I was intrigued with the packaging, actually, but after trying the product, I think the odd shape of the stick kind of makes sense. It feels like a lip balm that's too soft to be in a stick but too stiff to be in a pot. So instead it's in a weird chubby stick that makes it incredibly difficult to apply, precisely because it's too soft to be pushed up! I had to use my fingers.

Anyway, the texture is interesting, not waxy but is like a sticky jelly. It's moisturizing and lasts a decent a mount of time, but no shine. Hell, my Rosebud Perfume Strawberry Lip Balm gives me shinier lips than this "lip shine" and it's wax based! Oh yeah, and this lip shine has a sweet taste to it, which I just absolutely HATE!!! Why can't those cosmetic companies get this straight in their creative heads? If I wanted something sweet I'd pop a candy or chocolate in my mouth, not slathering my lips with lip balms! When I want to satisfy my sweet cravings the last thing I look at is my tube of chapstick, goddammit!

- Blood Orange: I like the scent, but the product is not quite there...

I have mixed feelings about these Roller Ball Lip Glosses. I know, how old am I, right? Whatever, may be I was nostalgic of my middle school days when I was looking at these :P They're okay, kind of glossy, kind of moisturizing, but too thin in texture to have good staying power. Again, they have a sweet taste, which bugs me.

- Mixed Berries: more strawberry than mixed berries, but holycrap - it smells and tastes exactly like the a roller ball gloss I had when I was in middle school!

- Melon: my least favorite flavor, too fake.

- Peach: kind of peachy, not really, but it's my favorite out of the three flavor wise, probably because the scent is lighter than the other two.

I also got the Roller Ball Eye Shadows :D I doubted these would work well, and I was right. The roller ball makes the shadow comes out patchy, so I just rub it on my finger to blend. The powder is decent, not as fine and soft as some of my other loose powder shadows, but it's not bad.

- Steel: matte, medium intensity, a charcoal gray that I'd probably use as a liner with a brush.

- Frost: metallic, very sheer, a sparkling cream color. I like this one infinitely better than the gray above, solely because it's translucent and not frosty or opaque, a good finishing shadow.

That's it...for now. I'll be keeping an eye on Avon so this won't be the end of it :D

See my previous Avon Loot! post.
